OJG Girls – Lady Grizz

The 2021-2022 hockey season is the inaugural year for the youth Lady Grizz!

Who We Are:

An 8U program currently consisting of 14 skaters, ranging from 2013 – 2016 birth year.  For some girls this is their 3rd year of organized hockey, while others came straight out of Future Wings or Learn to Play programs.  The girls are supported by 4 parent coaches, 2 volunteer female coaches, and a professional skating coach.  We’re able to split the girls into groups of similarly skilled players for both practices and games, creating a competitive and fun learning environment.

Our Purpose:

More girls are trying hockey than ever before!  While some can thrive in a coed environment, many feel more comfortable in a fun and supportive all-girls program.  This can be especially true for new players or during the switch from mini-mites (6U) to mites (8U), where a coed program (with many older boys having played for 3 years) can be intimidating.  Our purpose is to keep more girls involved in hockey, developing a lifelong love for the game and great friendships along the way.

While we are currently 8U, we would love to expand into the 6U and 10U ranks next season!

Accomplishments:

On October 17th, in honor of IIHF Girls Hockey Weekend, OJG Lady Grizz and Livonia Knights girls program played 2 half-ice games with over 30 skaters and 4 goalies.

On November 17th, the MAHA sponsored “Salute to Our Veterans” mite jamboree in Chelsea will feature its first All Girls 8U division with 8 registered teams!
